The Sanctus is an ancient Christian liturgical hymn and has been set to new music countless times over the centuries. In this arrangement, the composer wishes to evoke that "ancientness" by incorporating chant-like motives, organ accompaniment, and the Latin language. This arrangement reads as thoroughly modern, as well, including motivic bits of piano accompaniment, a modern harmonic structure and dissonances, and a brief quote of the iconic hymn Nicaea (Holy, Holy, Holy). Overlapping vocal lines are intended to wash over the listener...filling the space with glorious sound.
