Dr. Northway's Passacaglia is accessible to the moderate organist with a little work. It is patterned after the great passacaglias of Bach, Pachelbel and Wilan. With 34 statements of the opening theme, the piece contains various simple and arpeggiated flourishes above the pedal line, and also uses rhythmic and harmonic variations on the theme.
