For advanced unaccompanied mixed ensembles, "Dawn, Unhindered" is an a cappella setting of six haiku written by internees at concentration camps and assembly centers in Rohwer, Santa Fe, Lordsburg, Gila, Jerome, and Stockton. The composer intertwines these haiku with texts from two wisdom traditions that celebrate the sun as a symbol of justice and enlightenment. These texts bear powerful witness to the enduring strength of light and beauty amid oppression and darkness.
