A cantata for Baritone and Mezzo-Soprano Solists, SATB Chorus and Organ
Music by Ruth Watson Henderson
From the quiet opening timpani notes to the hushed and yearning settings of the final words -- Darkness sang to the light and the kiss of love was peace -- this exquisite work by Canadian composer Ruth Watson Henderson employs primarily Impressionistic harmonies and alternates between biblical texts and the poems of Wilfred Watson. Commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for their 2002 National Convention and destined to become a standard in serious choral repertoire, it was reviewed by Timothy Howard of the American Organist as colorful -- in some places downright ravishing.
