A poignant text by Thomas Troeger is set to a new tune by Lloyd Larson. The minor melody conveys the message perfectly and provides the opportunity for close harmonies. Unison and two-part writing comprise the first two stanzas, then the refrain opens up into relative major with beautiful harmonies. A key change provides lift into the third stanza, and the last refrain climaxes with beautiful harmonies and energy. The piece concludes quietly. Stunning!
