"John Kanaka" was learned orally by Stan Hugill from, according to his own words, "a wonderful shantyman, Harding of Barbadoes", who refers to himself as "Harding The Barbadian Barbarian!!" Stan Hugill, 78 year of age in 1984, learned the song as a young man, has sung it at many gatherings and published it in his "Shanties from the Seven Seas." It appears that this is the source for all further appearances of the song.
