For SATB Voices, divisi, unaccompanied
Words by Kathryn I.W. Sparks
Music by Samuel K. Sweet
The composer set this text to memorialize the 20 children who were murdered on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. A skillful marriage of music with word captures a sense of hope for a "new day." The soprano solo acts as the mother singing a lullaby to her child. The final phrase of the poem is a Latin prayer that provides a reflective moment: "May they rest eternally. Grant them rest in the eternal Light, the perpetual Light. Amen." Duration 4:10
