When I was contacted by The Salvation Army to compose a choral piece for their Western Territory Youth Chorus, I had no idea what to expect. My experience with Salvation Army music was based on hearing sacred brass band music. It was a delight to discover how contemporary and forward thinking their music program is. Composing to the lyrics of John Gowans (1934-2012), a legendary voice and former General of The Salvation Army, was a perfect way to bridge the new music of today with the timeless words of Romans 8:38-39, which happens to be one of my favorite scriptures.
This song is about celebrating God's many promises. Sing it with a contemporary feel, pop inflections and styling that mirror the syncopated rhythms and jazz harmonies in the accompaniment. I can't imagine singing this without a heart full of joy and a smile on my face.
I love how General Gowans weaves in the bold promises of this scripture passage with the simple phrase that states, "You can't stop God from loving you." It doesn't get any clearer or better than that!
