Using the words of Robert Lowry's beloved hymn "Nothing But the Blood," Daniel Mattix has created new music and arranged it in a choral setting. The piano accompaniment works well, but the string quartet version is truly the best. The minor tonality and the phrasing of the melodic lines both carry the strong emotions of the piece. At the end we even hear a touch of the original hymn smuggled into the closing phrase. Easy to Medium, for communion or Lent.
