The word Kaddish refers to the traditional Jewish mourners' prayer. It is an affirmation of faith that does not mention the deceased. Zwilich's setting includes text in English and Hebrew, with chant-like, austere choral writing almost completely in unison and diatonic. With sung pitches clearly prepared and supported by the piano, Zwilich's Kaddish is readily performable by choirs of any size or level.
