The uncle of celebrated Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli, Andrea Gabrieli was respected both as an organist and as a teacher--Giovanni and Hans Leo Hassler were among his better known pupils.' His highly regarded compositions ranged from instrumental works to sacred choral music to comic madrigals, Many consider his largest musical contribution to be the introduction of instruments into choral textures devised on a grand scale. "Kyrie" is an excellent example of the composer's four-part writing in the church style, Care should be taken to maintain legato throughout and to be aware of the imitative passages in the form of the piece.
