SATB with divisions & Organ
Arranged by John Rutter
for SATB (with divisions) and organ
In this well-known hymn, Herbert Howells sets a text by Robert Bridges to a hymn tune of his own composition, creating a hymn which has become a firm favourite all over the world. The first three verses do not stray from Howells' original setting, but John Rutter reharmonizes Verses 4 and 5 and adds a descant to the final verse, which was approved by Howells himself. This version of the hymn was recorded by the Cambridge Singers, directed by John Rutter, on the Collegium album I will lift up mine eyes: Sacred music by Stanford and Howells (COLCD 118).
