The Lisbon Psalms were melodically shaped in Portugal during January and February of 1972. The title serves to give location to the memories associated with those beautiful days. The intention was to develop material, sturdy yet pliable, that could later be used to create compositions for voice with distinctive settings for piano (Set I) or organ (Set II). The keyboard parts should not be considered as a mere accompaniment. Quite to the contrary, these materials are designed so that at times they might stand equal with the vocal line- not unlike a duo. In performance, musicians must be careful to create a balance between rhythmis precision and flexibility of phrase and cadence. Within the framework of the noted performance instructions the performers are at liberty to shape the melodic flow and the harmonic intensity.
