"Dreidel" is a derivative of an old German word meaning "top," and the game played by spinning this little top is an adaptation of an old gambling game. Chanukah was one of the few times of the year when the rabbis of old permitted games of chance, and the driedel, therefore, was a natural candidate for Chanukah entertainment.
