J. S. Bach/Charles Maggs
4 octaves, Level D
One of Bach's more famous chorales makes a beautiful small ensemble selection. The upper two parts sustain the triplet countermelody while the lowest part maintains the bass foundation, leaving one part to alternate between performing the melody and harmonic underpinnings against the top parts. The group will need to focus special attention on bringing out each entrance of the melody, making sure that the other three non-melodic parts do not overpower it. Especially difficult will be performing the piece with the effortless grace the music demands without letting the momentum relax into tedious tempo. The music is also in the same key as the original choral work, making it possible to use the piece as accompaniment for choir. The work is an ideal choice as an offertory or anthem as well as the perfect addition to any church or secular program.
