After Telemann had taken in the fall of 1721, the choirmaster position at Johanneum and the music director of the five main churches of Hamburg, it was one of his main tasks, to compose a new annual passion music and performing.
The "St. John Passion" (Running time: 90 minutes) from 1745 stands out in the musical design with a clear and transparent style. Two major choral pieces, six hymns that were sung probably by the community, and some Turbae put the choir in front of an interesting and quite manageable task. The sleek, restrained recitative and the eleven highly individual, contemplative arias provide the soloists plenty of room for artistic expression. The edition follows the original text of Telemann's complete works (Volume 29), ie reliability editorial offers up to date
