This familiar setting, also known in German as "Wachet auf, Ruft uns die Stimme"--or in English, "Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying"--is an energetic, dance-like piece that lends itself well to handbells. The bass accompaniment, written for mallets (or pluck), offers support to the treble accompaniment that dances in preparation for the stately entrance of the melody. Repetition makes this setting accessible and easy to learn for the ringers. It is appropriate for worship services during the Advent season, and it promises to be an exciting concert piece, as well.
