Cathy Moklebust has been recognized as one of the premiere composers and arrangers of handbell music. This arrangement of HERZLIEBSTER JESU shows why she has gained this reputation. From the opening measures, a contemplative pattern of repetitive quarter note chords accompanies a moving countermelody that leads into the introduction of the familiar hymn tune. The middle section introduces a solemn pattern of malleted bass notes underlying the melody played with chimes or handbells. The ending is quite unique as large chords of diminished fifths and tone clusters are malleted to represent the arrival of Jesus at the cross. A moving setting for Holy Week or for general use. 3-5 octaves (36, 48, 56 bells)
