A vibrant new hymn celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. "Earthen Vessels" reminds us that Martin Luther was an earnest, down-to-earth man as well as a thoughtful, inspired theologian. Tamara Raetz's unique text leads us from our creation at the Potter's hand to focus on one roughly-made "jar of clay" in particular, Martin Luther; and from the nails hammering Christ to the cross to the 95 theses' revelations hammered to the church door. "Earthen Vessels" establishes a firm connection between the early Protestant church and today's challenges to live the faith. Written in a traditional format, the new hymn tune LUTHER (written and arranged by Kathleen Wissinger) features interesting moments of harmonic tension in its compelling tune. The Refrain is plaintive and simple in melody and words "Fill us with Your Spirit Lord, From our vessels be outpoured." Use "Earthen Vessels" throughout this Reformation Anniversary year, as well as for dedication, memorial and general worship services. The folio includes an easily followed bulletin insert with melody line and text, SATB score for singing, a text-only sheet for slide projection or song sheet and a handbell/handchime accompaniment for 2-5 octaves Level 2. All but 2 octave choirs may introduce the hymn alone – and 2 settings (A & B) allow for a little variety as bells accompany congregational singing, alone or in consort with piano or organ.
