Composed by Leonardo Leo
Edited by Rod Walker

Leonardo Leo (1694-1744) was a leading figure of the Neapolitan School. Along with Alessandro Scarlatti, he was prominent in the development of the eighteenth century opera buffa. Leo was highly regarded as a composer and was held in high esteem both as a teacher and a conductor. From 1713 until his death in 1744, Leo held the position of organist and conductor in several Neapolitan churches and the Chapel Royal.

Leo composed six masses, each consisting of only two sections, a Kyrie and a Gloria. This "Gloria" is the beginning movement of the ten movement second section from Leo's Mass in F. Care should be taken to not allow the vocal lines to be too heavy. A spirited, buoyant approach adds to the dignity of this delightful musical statement.
